  • What makes Folio books special?

From our first books in 1947 it has been our goal to create beautiful and authoritative editions of great literary works for readers.

The Folio Society brings together a worldwide community of book lovers who appreciate the quality and craftsmanship of fine editions. We have long been a haven for the eclectic and open-minded reader, providing a real depth both within and across genres.

Our non-fiction list ranges from the seminal ideas of Charles Darwin to the hard-nosed historical analysis of Martin Gilbert and the remarkable insights of Mary Beard’s Pompeii; whilst our fiction spans the wit of Truman Capote’s Breakfast at Tiffany’s, the intoxicating science fiction of Frank Herbert’s Dune and the whimsy of Kenneth Grahame’s The Wind in the Willows.

More information can be found here.

  • How do I submit my illustrations for consideration?

Illustration is at the heart of everything we do at Folio, and we enjoy finding new and talented artists. If you have suitable work for our commissions, we welcome digital submissions only. Please familiarise yourself with the kind of books we publish and the type of work we commission before sending anything. Most commissions are for adult fiction titles. We are looking for a good response to the text, conveying tension, mood, drama, period details, characterisation, repetition and interaction of characters, etc.

If your work is suitable, please send a small number of appropriate samples as lo-res jpegs (total size no bigger than 2MB) and a link to your website, emailed to [email protected]. Due to the amount of submissions received, we unfortunately cannot acknowledge submissions. Any suitable work will be saved for future reference and we will contact you should an opportunity arise.

You can also choose to enter the Folio Book Illustration Award. This free-to-enter competition is open to everyone over the age of 18 who has not previously been commissioned by The Folio Society. Six shortlisted artists receive a prize of Folio e-Gift Vouchers and a portfolio review by the Folio Art Directors, while the winner also receives a substantial cash prize. The Folio Book Illustration Award 2022 is open for entries from 4 May until 22 June 2022, and the artwork must be based on Edgar Allan Poe’s short story The Masque of the Red Death. Find out more about the Folio Book Illustration Award.

  • PACKAGING

Folio is committed to ensuring all steps in the book production and delivery process are as sustainable as possible to help protect our planet.

Folio is no longer using shrink wrap on new books although some backlist books will still be delivered in shrink wrap.  The new wrapping can be recycled and we have tested it to ensure the books arrive in good condition.

Parcels are delivered to our customers in packaging made from recycled and recyclable card and paper.

If your portfolio doesn’t as yet demonstrate an ability to illustrate adult fiction, you might like to undertake a personal project – choosing a well-known book and developing a short series of illustrations. Also, we strongly suggest you enter the annual Book Illustration Competition which we run with House of Illustration. Each year entrants are asked to submit three finished illustrations and a binding design for a title chosen by us, the winner receives a commission to fully illustrate this title.
