‘It has captured the imaginations of millions for the same reason the archetypal dramas of Homer, Sophocles or Shakespeare have lasted for millennia.’
- The Guardian

‘A man might befriend a wolf, even break a wolf, but no man could truly tame a wolf.’

Although the War of the Five Kings has waned, its consequences still ripple throughout the world. Jon Snow has been elected the new Lord Commander of the Night’s Watch, but his efforts to unite the Freefolk and his soldiers against the Others are leading him into dangerous territory.
Across the Narrow Sea, Daenerys rules the City of Meereen with an uneasy heart. Various suitors vie for her hand in marriage, but they all have their own hidden agendas – worse still, her dragons are slipping from her control, hunting and killing where they wish. And behind it all, a figure that has been working in the dark for decades to manipulate the Iron Throne begins to step into the light …
‘The Folio Society’s splendid new editions of the “Song of Ice and Fire” series are masterpieces of the bookmaker’s art.’
- George R. R. Martin
‘A Song of Ice and Fire’ is particularly celebrated for its memorable characters, and Burton makes full use of this epic cast with his spectacular work on the series. His chapter heading designs reflect the characters’ loyalties and personalities, as well as their changing fates. Tyrion, the Lannister who has ever relied on his wits and learning to survive, is represented by a lion and a book; Arya, whose story has previously been heralded by her family’s direwolf, now has a leaping cat as her identity transforms in the House of Black and White. The series is also loved for its rousing action scenes, and Burton supplies a dragon’s horde of these too, with atmospheric illustrations that summon giants, wights, sea battles, and more.
