About Richard II
Richard II is charismatic, eloquent, and flamboyantly witty. And a disastrous King– dishonest, dangerous, and politically incompetent. Echoing down the centuries is the perennial problem: how to deal with a ruler who has a rock-solid right to rule but is set on wrecking the country he leads.
Shakespeare’s subtle, caustic, and powerful play revolves round two startlingly modern figures: Richard, an autocrat who believes he is divinely sanctioned, and Henry Bollingbrook, a hard-headed pragmatist who has genuine authority.
Richard II is played by Jonathan Bailey, whose past work includes Bridgerton, Fellow Travellers, Cassio in Nicholas Hytner’s National Theatre production of Othello and Edgar to Ian McKellen’s King Lear. He has also won an Olivier Award for his role of Jamie in Company and is Fiyero in the Wicked movie.

Entries must be submitted before midnight (GMT) on Friday 25 April 2025. Submissions received after this time will not be counted.
One winner will receive a Folio edition of Shakespeare: The Complete Plays, Two tickets to Richard II at the Bridge Theatre and an overnight stay in a London hotel.
The prize includes two tickets to see Richard II at the Bridge Theatre, London for Monday – Friday performances. Tickets will be allocated by the box office with any requirements taken into consideration where appropriate. Richard II is at the Bridge Theatre until the 10th May 2025, ticket requests outside of this date will be honoured for any production at the Bridge Theatre until 1 September 2025. Richard II is recommended for ages 11+. In addition, all attendees must adhere to the Bridge Theatre's general terms of entry.
The prize also includes an overnight stay at The Tower Hotel, London based on two people sharing a double room.
Bicycle Partnerships will contact the competition winner to fulfil all elements of the prize within 7 days following the winner being drawn. The winner will then have 7 days from this contact to accept the prize. If the winner does not respond within 7 days the competition will be redrawn and a new winner selected.
Winners are responsible for any taxes or customs fees that may apply during shipping.
The prize is non-transferable and cannot be exchanged for cash or an alternative prize. No part or parts of the prize may be substituted for other benefits, items or additions.
The Folio Society reserves the right to make the final decision in the event of any disputes.
