One of the five ‘wisdom’ Books of the Old Testament, The Book of Proverbs is an anthology of poetic verses that are easy to read and study, and that remain hugely relevant today. The Book deals frankly with ethical and practical issues that cross boundaries of status, and it offers wisdom and insight for the social, spiritual and scholastic life of all humanity. Published in series with the sell-out Folio edition of The Book of Psalms, this beautiful pocketbook has been simply and discreetly designed to enable readers to focus on the text, with typographer Jessica Hische’s beautiful lettering the only embellishment to the narrative.
Writer and broadcaster the Rt Revd Nick Baines became the first Bishop of Leeds in 2014. A widely published author and commentator, Baines has written a number of books on faith and Christianity. His fascinating and in-depth new introduction to this edition places the Book of Proverbs in context with the rest of the Old Testament and the Bible. Baines provides a widely researched historical overview of the text, while also addressing the theme of wisdom from a modern stance and the relevance of the Book of Proverbs to everyday life.
