Thank You, Jeeves

‘It is no use in telling me that there are bad aunts and good aunts. At the core they are all alike. Sooner or later, out pops the cloven hoof’

Bertie Wooster’s lamentable performance on the banjolele is too much even for the imperturbable Jeeves. In high dudgeon, Wooster and instrument retire to a cottage in the country – only to find that the adjoining house party includes his ex-fiancée Pauline Stoker, ‘one of those girls who want you to come and swim a mile before breakfast’, and his old enemy Sir Roderick Glossop, a man with ‘the crust of a rhinoceros’.

Delightful and hilarious in equal measure, Pelham Grenville Wodehouse’s writing also revels in the rhythm of its language and the precision of its plots. In this edition, reissued with a new binding, Paul Cox provides lively, effervescent illustrations, while Hugh Laurie’s witty introduction is appropriately steeped in the spirit of Wodehouse.

A true master of comedic writing

‘Mr Wodehouse’s idyllic world can never stale. He will continue to release future generations from captivity’

Prolific author and creator of Bertie, Jeeves, Blandings Castle and a whole cast of memorable characters, Pelham Grenville Wodehouse was born in Guildford in 1881 and educated at Dulwich College. After working for the Hong Kong and Shanghai Bank for two years, he left to earn his living as a journalist and storywriter. Wodehouse first introduced Jeeves in a short story in 1915, and since then the riotous tales of the bumbling Bertie Wooster and his unflappable valet have become firm favourites around the world. As Wodehouse wrote in his preface to Very Good, Jeeves!: ‘It is now some fourteen summers since, an eager lad in my early thirties, I started to write Jeeves stories: and many people think this nuisance should now cease … But against this must be set the fact that writing Jeeves stories gives me a great deal of pleasure and keeps me out of the public-houses.’
