Frank Cauldhame is isolated, and deeply disturbed. Instantly controversial upon its release, The Wasp Factory still retains the power to shock today, and in this first-ever illustrated edition, Darren Hopes' startling and unsettling images match the text perfectly. With its bold design and arresting illustrations, this Folio Book has been elevated to become a dark artefact, as carefully constructed and haunting as Frank's own rituals.
On a remote Scottish island, sixteen-year-old Frank Cauldhame lives an isolated and deeply unconventional life with his eccentric father. His days are shaped by strange rituals, dark inventions and a private logic that sets him apart from the world beyond the dunes. But when news arrives that his troubled brother Eric has escaped from a psychiatric hospital and is heading home, Frank's carefully controlled existence begins to unravel. As past and present collide, long-buried secrets surface – forcing a reckoning that will transform everything he thought he knew about himself. Darkly comic, unsettling and utterly original, The Wasp Factory is a bold and disturbing exploration of identity, family and the limits of the human mind.

About the Author

Iain Banks

Iain Banks (1954–2013) was a Scottish novelist educated on both the east and west coasts of Scotland. He studied at the University of Stirling, gaining a degree in English with Philosophy and Psychology and, while there, appeared as an extra in Monty Python and the Holy Grail. His first novel, The Wasp Factory (1984; Folio 2026), was published to widespread controversy. Described by one newspaper as a work of ‘unparalleled depravity’, it quickly established Banks as a bold new voice and has since come to be seen as one of the most distinctive novels of the late 20th century. Although Banks considered himself a science-fiction writer, he published his literary fiction without his middle initial, reserving Iain M. Banks for his science-fiction. Across his career, he wrote 14 literary novels, including The Crow Road, which was adapted for television by the BBC. He also wrote short stories, poetry and the travelogue Raw Spirit. His final novel, The Quarry, was published shortly after his death in 2013.
