Acknowledged as one of the first great historians, Thucydides was born into an aristocratic Athenian family in c.460 BC. He began writing his famous narrative at the outset of the war between Athens and Sparta and served as a general until he was exiled for failing to retain Amphipolis. After 20 years he was allowed to return to Athens where he died c.400 BC.
