The Folio Society is thrilled to share its first ever major exhibition, celebrating nearly 80 years of exceptional book art. Coming to The Society of Illustrators in New York, this landmark show will feature more than 90 artists and celebrate the wonders of book illustration in all its diversity of form and genre.

THE EXPERIENCE

The Art of Folio exhibit will be held across two floors at the Society of Illustrators, highlighting 91artists from across the globe—from Amsterdam to Australia and from Missouri to Montreal and many locations in between. The ground floor will showcase the contemporary artists working with Folio today, including the dreamscapes of Sam Weber (Dune), the cutting-edge designs of Anna and Elena Balbusso (The Handmaid’s Tale), as well as Jamaal Barber (The Underground Railroad), Mu Pan (Monkey) and many, many more.

With over 100 artworks arranged thematically by genre, visitors will be transported from the fantasy realms of A Wizard of Earthsea and Game of Thrones to contemporary historical fiction such as The Color Purple and Wolf Hall.

Also, on the ground floor, in honour of 100 years since the first publication of The Great Gatsby, a special area will be dedicated to our new edition with a designated space for original artwork and a more detailed look at the construction of a Folio Society book. This dark and magical edition, coming April 10th, features illustrations by the legendary Yuko Shimizu, an award-winning New York-based artist. Shimizu’s artwork masterfully captures the decadence, desire, and deception that simmer beneath the Gatsby’s glittering surface.

The exhibition’s lower floor allows visitors to see how Folio has evolved while staying true to its founding principles: creating books that are as visually engaging as they are enriching. Over the decades, Folio has worked with some of the most renowned illustrators like Quentin Blake, known for his instantly recognisable, energetic line work, and Beryl Cook, whose paintings capture humour and humanity, represent the diversity of visual storytelling in Folio’s history.
