About the Author
Iain Banks (1954–2013) was a Scottish novelist educated on both the east and west coasts of Scotland. He studied at the University of Stirling, gaining a degree in English with Philosophy and Psychology and, while there, appeared as an extra in Monty Python and the Holy Grail. His first novel, The Wasp Factory (1984; Folio 2026), was published to widespread controversy. Described by one newspaper as a work of ‘unparalleled depravity’, it quickly established Banks as a bold new voice and has since come to be seen as one of the most distinctive novels of the late 20th century. Although Banks considered himself a science-fiction writer, he published his literary fiction without his middle initial, reserving Iain M. Banks for his science-fiction. Across his career, he wrote 14 literary novels, including The Crow Road, which was adapted for television by the BBC. He also wrote short stories, poetry and the travelogue Raw Spirit. His final novel, The Quarry, was published shortly after his death in 2013.
