Limited Editions

Welcome to the world of Folio Limited Editions – where every detail is obsessed over, every finish feels just right, and the print run is … well, not that many.

What Is a Folio Limited Edition?

It’s the result of our editors, designers and craftspeople going all in – combining serious literary know-how with bold design and extraordinary craftsmanship. Read on to discover what makes these books so special.

Gone in a flash

Our limited editions are printed in very exclusive runs – usually under 1,000 copies.

Every detail tells the tale

The story inspires every choice, from the cover cloth to the typeface. Because every epic deserves epic design.

Exclusive to Folio

Our books often include extras you won't find anywhere else – from signed letters and tipped-in artwork, to hand-drawn maps or ephemera.

Blink and you'll miss it

Once our limited editions have sold out, that's it. They move fast – and with no reprints – once they're gone, they're gone.

The Making of a Limited Edition

Every edition takes months – sometimes years – to get right.

With every Limited Edition, we’re aiming to create something truly special – the ultimate version of a beloved book. That means finding the perfect finishes, testing new materials and working with the very best craftspeople. Our limited edition Shakespeare: The Complete Plays took years from concept to publication, every detail carefully considered. As Production Director Kate Grimwade says:

‘We’ve got to be brave and keep trying new things. We’ve got to experiment and break boundaries in bookmaking. That’s what we’re about.’

The Making of a Limited Edition

We work with craftspeople, specialist printers, binders and artists

Every Folio limited edition is a team effort, something that couldn't happen without the support and incredible skills of artisans and craftspeople – from hand-marblers and leatherworkers to digital printers and illustrators at the top of their game.

We collaborate closely with these expert makers to realise each book’s vision, combining traditional techniques with bold innovation to create something that’s beautiful – but that's built to be handled and cherished.

The Making of a Limited Edition

If a detail matters to the story, we'll find a way to do it!

Whether it's goatskin leather and letterpress printing, or hand-marbled endpapers and holographic foil, if a detail matters, we’ll find a way to do it.

Our Limited Edition of Kitagawa Utamaro: Studies from Nature involved extraordinary levels of craftsmanship to recreate five 18th-century Japanese volumes exactly as they were first made.

From delicate Japanese sewn bindings to concertina folds and subtle mica-like overprinting, every technique was carefully chosen to echo the originals. We even embossed individual pages to mirror the texture of the first editions – proof that nothing is too intricate when it comes to getting it right.

IN THE SPOTLIGHT

Meet the Supplier:
Craft Bookbinding at Smith Settle

Step into Smith Settle’s bindery and you might find a Folio book in the making at every turn: folded sheets stacked in neat towers, silk laid across boards, bound books pressed and shaped by practiced hands.

Here, a small, deeply skilled team proves that craft book binding is not a relic of the past, but a living, thriving industry.

What Makes Them Different from The Rest of the Folio Collection?

Each Limited Edition is a true labour of love: longer timelines, rarer materials and design choices that simply wouldn't be possible in our wider collection. These are books at their most ambitious.

A masterclass in bookmaking

The books in our wider collection are beautifully made, but Limited Editions truly push the boat out.

Bigger, bolder, rarer

Often larger in size, they are made using carefully sourced materials– selected to complement the story perfectly.

Extras you'll only find here

Additional features like signed introductions, fold-out maps or facsimile documents elevate the reading experience.

Crafted to last a lifetime

A Limited Edition is, of course, designed to be treasured, but above all to be read: to be handled, cherished and to last a lifetime.
