After losing her parents, a young girl is sent to live with her reclusive grandfather high in the Swiss Alps, surrounded by wildflowers and grazing goats. About the Author
Johanna Spyri was born in Hirzel, Switzerland in 1827 and spent much of her adult life in Zürich. She began writing in her forties, publishing stories that drew heavily on the countryside landscapes of her youth and the traditions of the Swiss Alps. Her best-known novel, Heidi, was published in two volumes in 1880 and 1881, and quickly became an international success. Originally written in German, it has since been translated into over seventy languages. Spyri wrote prolifically over the course of her career, though no book achieved the lasting popularity of Heidi, which remains one of the most widely read and beloved works of children's literature. Spyri died in Zürich in 1901.
