Editor's Notes

'Goddess, sing of the cataclysmic wrath of great Achilles ...' So begins one the great epic poems of the Classical Age and a story so influential its themes of war, honour and mortality echo still today. In a revered translation by Emily Wilson, Homer's poetry is perfectly alive for a modern audience and is beautifully complemented by Clive Hicks-Jenkins's extraordinary illustrations.
Synopsis

Emily Wilson’s masterful new translation brings new clarity and vibrancy to Homer’s epic tale of war, pride and vengeance. Set during the final weeks of the Trojan War, the poem plunges readers into the heart of the conflict, where gods scheme, heroes fall and the wrath of Achilles threatens to consume everything. With Wilson’s fresh, poetic style, this fundamental work of Western literature feels more immediate than ever, capturing both the grandeur and deeply human core of Homer's world.

Clive Hicks-Jenkins on illustrating Homer's The Iliad and The Odyssey

Author image

Homer was believed to have been born between the 12th and 8th centuries BC and may have lived on the coast of Asia Minor. Little is known about his life beyond what can be gleaned in his stories, and there have been many assumptions made based on his writing and the characters that appear in his work. It is generally accepted that The Iliad (Folio, 2025) was written first and The Odyssey (Folio, 2025) was written later in Homer’s life. Although these are the only two works attributed to Homer, many others have been linked to him, including the Homeric Hymns.
