Editor's Notes

Homer's epic poems are the foundation stones of Western literature. Encompassing the fall of Troy and the beguiling journey of Odysseus, these are monumental achievements of storytelling that are told afresh by Emily Wilson's dramatic translation and by Clive Hicks-Jenkins's extraordinary illustrations.
Synopsis

In The Odyssey, Emily Wilson brings new clarity and lyricism to Homer’s timeless story of adventure, longing and survival. Ten years after the fall of Troy, Odysseus is still struggling to return home – facing shipwrecks, sea monsters, vengeful gods and his own past at every turn.

This is a journey not only across oceans, but through questions of identity, justice and what it means to belong. With Wilson’s vivid, poetic translation, The Odyssey emerges as both a thrilling epic and a deeply human tale – as gripping now as it was nearly 3000 years ago.

Clive Hicks-Jenkins on illustrating Homer's The Iliad and The Odyssey

Author image

Homer was believed to have been born between the 12th and 8th centuries BC and may have lived on the coast of Asia Minor. Little is known about his life beyond what can be gleaned in his stories, and there have been many assumptions made based on his writing and the characters that appear in his work. It is generally accepted that The Iliad (Folio, 2025) was written first and The Odyssey (Folio, 2025) was written later in Homer’s life. Although these are the only two works attributed to Homer, many others have been linked to him, including the Homeric Hymns.
