Editor's Notes

Set in the aftermath of the Second World War, Mythago Wood is a fantasy that exists within the real world; one where romance and Celtic mythology blend with the everyday and where extraordinary events occur.

One of the most beloved British fantasy novels of the last 50 years, this has been fully illustrated for the first time by legendary fantasy artist John Howe, who reveals his own relationship with the novel in a new foreword and who has personally signed all 500 copies.

A classic of British fantasy writing, Mythago Wood is often whispered of in the same breath as The King of Elfland’s Daughter and Tolkien's Middle-earth.
Synopsis

Deep in the heart of England lies Ryhope Wood, an ancient, untamed forest where myth and reality blur. When Stephen Huxley returns home after the Second World War, he discovers his father’s obsessive research into the wood’s secrets and the mythagos that dwell there – mystical manifestations of ancient myths brought to life. As Stephen ventures deeper, becoming entangled in a world of legendary beings and a haunting love story, he risks losing himself to the wood itself. Richly imaginative and steeped in folklore, Mythago Wood is a spellbinding exploration of memory, myth and the power of the subconscious.

About the Author

Robert Holdstock (1948–2009) was a British fantasy writer whose work redefined the genre, blending myth, psychology and landscape into something wholly original. Mythago Wood (1984, Folio 2025), his best-known novel, introduced readers to Ryhope Wood – an ancient, primeval forest where archetypes from legend take on physical form. The book won the World Fantasy Award and launched the Mythago cycle, a series exploring the power of myth and memory. Deeply influenced by folklore, Jungian psychology and the English countryside, Holdstock’s work remains a touchstone for fantasy readers drawn to the mysterious and the mythical.
