Editor's Notes

Nearly two centuries ago, on a cold and snowy December night, Charles Dickens stood before a crowd of two thousand in Birmingham Town Hall and read aloud his Christmas Carol. The performance was an overwhelming success. In the years since, A Christmas Carol (1843; Folio 1970, 1988, 2003, 2015) has become synonymous with the festive season. It is an enduring classic and the most iconic Christmas story of all time.     This elegant limited edition is an homage to the very first printing of A Christmas Carol from 1843. Bound in blocked leather, with golden page edges, the book is housed in a clothbound clamshell box with an inset illustration of a traditional Victorian Christmas tree. The inner lining features a festive Victorian streetscape.
Synopsis

Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol is the quintessential festive tale, at once a ghost story, a moral fable and a celebration of the redemptive power of kindness. On a frosty Christmas Eve, cold-hearted Ebenezer Scrooge is visited by three ghosts who guide him through shadows of his past, glimpses of a joy-filled present he has long ignored and a chilling vision of what will come if he fails to change his ways. Through satire and sentiment, Dickens depicts the harsh realities of Victorian London and the possibilities of human redemption. This leather-bound limited edition, featuring exquisite illustrations by Sarah Coomer and a revelatory introduction by Simon Callow, brings Dickens' unforgettable characters to life, making it not only a joy to read but a timeless keepsake reminiscent of the very first edition.

Charles Dickens was born in 1812 in Landport, England. His family moved to London in 1816, and then to Chatham in 1817, where Dickens spent the happiest years of his childhood. They returned to London in 1822, and two years later Dickens’s father was imprisoned for debt. Dickens was sent to work in a shoe-polish factory – a period that would come to influence much of his later writing. In 1833 he began contributing stories and essays to newspapers and magazines, and The Pickwick Papers, his first commercial success, was serialised in 1836. He went on to complete 15 novels – including Oliver Twist (1838), A Tale of Two Cities (1859) and Great Expectations (1861) – all now considered classics of English literature, and became a celebrity in America as well as in Britain. He also established, edited and regularly contributed to the journals Household Words (1850–9) and All the Year Round (1859–70). Dickens died in 1870; he is buried in Westminster Abbey.
