Philip Pullman at the Oxford Literature Festival Folio Society event

Author receives a special thank-you gift from us

The Sunday Times Oxford Literature Festival took place 16-24 March, with one of the most eagerly anticipated events being Philip Pullman's talk with Sunday Times Chief Fiction Reviewer Peter Kemp. The Former Children's Laureate discussed his exceptional body of work, including the multi-award-winning trilogy His Dark Materials.

Philip Pullman has been a favourite collaborator of ours, and we are delighted to be reprinting the Folio edition of His Dark Materials, which features his own black & white drawings throughout as well as a wonderful collection of specially commissioned colour illustrations by Peter Bailey. You can read more on it here (or for members in the US and Canada, click here).

As our way of thanking Philip for taking part in the Oxford event, we presented him with a lettered copy of our new limited edition of The Poems of Thomas Gray with watercolour illustrations by William Blake. He is a huge Blake fan, and had this to say after the presentation:

'I owe the Folio Society a very large Thank You, both for sponsoring the event I did with Peter Kemp (who deserves an award himself) and for the magnificent book, which I've been poring over since bringing it home. I don't know which illustration I like best, but the goldfishes are close to the top of the list. Blake never ceases to amaze and delight. How was it possible for him not to be famous and celebrated in his own time?

'Anyway, it was a delightful evening, and I was very glad to be able to talk to some of the Folio people. I don't know what being an Honorary Fellow of the Festival means, but I'm very happy that this year at least it is so closely associated with the Folio Society.'
