The Eagle of the Ninth at Cannes

Two film versions due out 2010

News from this year's Cannes film festival reveals not one but two upcoming adaptations of Rosemary Sutcliff’s The Eagle of the Ninth, her classic novel based on the true story of the Roman legion that disappeared in the Scottish Highlands. Centurion is produced by Christian Colson, who won an Oscar for Slumdog Millionaire, and stars Olga Kurlyenko who appeared in Quantum of Solace. Another adaptation of the story, this one titled The Eagle of the Ninth, is also being filmed in Scotland later in the year. The cast includes Donald Sutherland and Jamie Bell. According to a report in The Times, distributors are clambering for rights to both films, viewed as potential box office smashes - the perennial popularity of Sutcliff's work playing a major part. The Eagle of the Ninth is one of our most popular children’s books of recent years, and a wonderful historical novel for readers of any age. We have also just published The Silver Branch, the second book in the series.
