South Asian Literature Festival - 1 to 11 November 2012

Folio members receive 20% off ticket prices at three British Library festival events

Over 100 writers and artists are gathering in London from 1 to 11 November for the third annual South Asian Literature Festival. More than 50 events are planned, tackling subjects as diverse as Diwali storytelling and the cultural impact of the Ugandan Asian exodus 40 years ago.

The 11-day programme of readings, music, poetry, debates, comedy and more will take place at venues across London. We are delighted to announce that Folio members are eligible for 20% reductions on ticket prices to the three different events taking place at the British Library .

On 5 November, a panel of speakers - including journalist and author Salil Tripathi, historian and broadcaster Michael Wood and historian and writer Alex von Tunzelmann – look at the nature of writing about India as an outsider, exploring issues each writer faces in getting to grips with intricacies of a broad and vibrant culture. The discussion begins at 6.30pm and ends at 7.45pm.

On 9 November, The Makings of an Empire: the Mark of the Mughals on South Asia begins at 6.30pm (to 8pm). Join historian John Keay, author Timeri Murari and academic Susan Stronge along with journalist Fergus Nicoll as they discuss the impact left on the subcontinent by the Mughals, in the arts, cuisine, fashion and language, as well as thought, politics, warfare, religious attitudes and lifestyle.

Finally, at a second event on 9 November, beginning at 7.30pm, the British Library's main foyer will play host to an extraordinary night of music, performance and spectacle, with the interior transformed into a Mughal Palace. Joining DJ Ritu and guests, hosting a Kuch Kuch party, will be British Library artist-in–resident Christopher Green, mehndi artists from Ash Kumar, dancers from Nutkut, installations, demonstrations and lots more. A bar and Indian street food will also be available.
