The winner of the second annual Folio Society / House of Illustration Book Illustration Competition was announced at an awards evening at the Collyer Bristow Gallery in Central London on July 3. The 'set book' this year was Angela Carter's The Bloody Chamber and Other Stories. Marina Warner, introducer of our forthcoming edition, leading expert on folk and fairy tale traditions, and a friend of the late author, was the Chair of the Judging Panel. After congratulating all the shortlisted artists, she announced that the overall winner was Igor Karash, an artist originally from Azerbaijan who now makes his home in Missouri.
In her speech, Marina Warner praised Igor's ability to create ‘an overall mood of mystery and pleasure’ in a series of illustrations that ‘conceal more than you can take in at first glance’. Perhaps most telling was that Igor restrained from using an obviously sensual red palette, applying a green tinge to each piece that ‘helps to lure us into this otherworld of mystery’.
