Folio Private View of Henry VIII: Man & Monarch at the British Library

'a show to nurture the enthusiasms of a new generation of historians' The Times

On 20 May, The Folio Society hosted a private view of the new exhibition at the British Library, Henry VIII: Man & Monarch, guest-curated by Dr David Starkey. To mark our recent publication of 3 facsimiles from King Henry's library, we were given a special opportunity to invite our London-based limited edition buyers to see the exhibition outside normal hours, and to enjoy refreshments in the Library's Folio Society Gallery.

Everyone agreed that the exhibition was magnificent - beautifully displayed, and featuring 'several of the most splendid, most evocative or most significant documents of the era' (The Times) - and the evening also gave members an opportunity to meet Folio staff and other Folio limited edition enthusiasts. The facsimiles themselves were all on show, and members were able to examine them closely and ask questions. Among the British Library experts on hand to share their formidable knowledge was Peter Barber, author of the commentary volume accompanying our facsimile of King Henry's Map of the British Isles.

We've included a few snapshots taken on the evening. It is not often that such a heaven-sent opportunity for getting members together presents itself, but the success of the private view means that we shall certainly keep our eyes open for similar opportunities in the future. The exhibition itself will remain open until 6 September 2009 and is well worth visiting. Click here for more information on tickets and opening times.
