The second Book Illustration Competition is launched

Competition book: Angela Carter's The Bloody Chamber and Other Stories

Our recent edition of The Outsider owes its superb illustrations to Matthew Richardson, winner of the inaugural Book Illustration Competition. Following the success of ‘Getting inside The Outsider’, our challenge to artists this year is to illustrate Angela Carter’s The Bloody Chamber and Other Stories.

Our aim – in partnership with House of Illustration – is to foster new talent and promote the often-overlooked art of book illustration. The first prize is a £4,000 commission to illustrate and design the binding of the chosen book, with five runners-up receiving £500 each.

Among many outstanding submissions, Matthew Richardson’s images won for their expression of the protagonist’s alienation (one is pictured here). He used collage techniques and ‘found objects’ to create discombobulated scenes made up of fragments; oddly-sized with distorted perspectives. In them, Meursault appears both unflinching and vulnerable, not bound to his surroundings but seeming to merely find himself in them – no more or less sentient than the table he sits at or the sea he swims in. You can see all the finalists’ entries here. Entry for the next competition closes on 10 January 2012. We welcome submissions from anyone over 18 who is not a Folio Society published illustrator.
