An evening to treasure

Treasures of Heaven Member Event at the British Museum

On Thursday 21st July the British Museum and The Folio Society hosted an event to celebrate the opening of the Treasures of Heaven exhibition. It was a great success - nearly 500 members and their partners attended, enjoyed a glass of wine, and visited the exhibition. British Museum members were also present, and it was a pleasure to introduce Folio books to a new, appreciative audience.

The exhibition is superb - The earliest items date from the late Roman period and trace the evolution of the cult of the saints from the 4th century to the peak of relic veneration in late medieval Europe. Treasures such as these disappeared during the Reformation in the 16th century, which saw the wholesale destruction of saints’ shrines. The exhibition offers a rare opportunity to glimpse this lost heritage of beautiful medieval craftsmanship. One particularly impressive item is a reliquary for a thorn said to be taken from Jesus' Crown of Thorns, and linked to Jean, Duc de Berry - the legendary patron of the arts who commissioned Les Très Riches Heures.

The Folio Society is already considering future events, as well as a possible partnership with the British Museum that could offer further benefits to Folio members... more details arriving soon!
