Matthew Richardson wins inaugural Book Illustration Competition

The Folio Society and House of Illustration announce winning commission for The Outsider

We are delighted to announce the winner of the inaugural Folio Society / House of Illustration Book Illustration Competition. Entrants were challenged to create a series of illustrations and a binding design for the forthcoming Folio edition of Albert Camus' The Outsider. Matthew Richardson (pictured here with judge Quentin Blake), a graduate of the Central St Martin's School of Art and Design, was named as the winner at a ceremony in The Gallery, Cork Street, London on Monday 4 July. The prize of £4,000 was presented by Quentin Blake, who said that Matthew's illustrations 'completely captured the essence of Camus' existential masterpiece.' Matthew Richardson was thrilled to see the final book: 'I found the whole process enjoyable, but it's amazing to hold the actual books - so beautifully produced'.

The Outsider will be available to order at the start of the new publishing year so look out for details soon. And if you or someone you know would be interested in entering next year's competition - open to anyone over the age of 18 who has not previously illustrated a Folio Society edition - we will have news on next year's book competition in the autumn.
