Folio at the Charleston Festival

Members join Folio staff for two sold-out sponsored events

With exceptionally fine weather, a bucolic setting in the South Downs of Sussex and some brilliant speakers, this year's Charleston Literary Festival was a great success. We were able to offer a number of free tickets to two Folio-sponsored events, which generated a huge response from members. On 25 May Melvyn Bragg gave a virtuoso performance in his talk on the King James Bible, treating the enthralled audience to a whistle-stop tour of the entire history of this great book. As ever, the seasoned broadcaster regaled his audience with some thought-provoking arguments about its provenance - and its impact during the last four centuries. At the second event - on 28 May - Judy Golding, daughter of William Golding, and Elizabeth Chatwin, widow of Bruce Chatwin, took the stage to discuss their new books which explore the conflict between privacy and disclosure in protecting a writer's legacy. Elizabeth Chatwin has co-edited a collection of her husband's letters, Under The Sun. Judy Golding's book, The Children of Lovers, details her life as the daughter of a 'famously acute observer of children'. In discussion with Andrew Lownie, founder of the Biographers' Club, and in exchanges with the audience, Golding and Chatwin revealed how these literary giants would cut themselves off from their families and indeed the world when they were working. It was intriguing to hear their different perspectives - as daughter and wife - of the writer's need for solitude. On one point they both agreed - this was less a selfish act than a necessary one. Our edition of Golding's Lord of the Flies remains available to order, but Chatwin's The Songlines is currently out of print.

As an interesting footnote, a stage production of Lord of the Flies is playing until 18 June at Regent's Park Open Air Theatre in London. Click here for details.
