Tim Colley, Members Room Manager

It is with great sadness that we must report that Tim Colley, Members Room Manager at The Folio Society, has passed away after a year-long battle with cancer.

Tim joined The Society in 1997 bringing with him a wealth of knowledge, a lifelong love of literature (from Dan Dare to the Bloomsbury set) and a self-effacing sense of humour that made him incredibly popular with members and colleagues alike.

Immeasurably modest about his achievements away from Folio, Tim was a classically trained actor, who in later years self-studied to a degree with distinction from the Open University; though, typically, he didn’t like to talk about it. His love of the stage also encompassed music. Tim was an incredibly knowledgeable opera buff with a particular passion for the music of Dame Joan Sutherland.

He was passionate too about the city of London, and would have made an excellent tour guide, “were it not for the tourists,” his son Ed said warmly at the service held for Tim at the Golders Green Crematorium, before going on to describe the great pride Tim took in his family, friends and The Folio Society.

It’s this last bit that we will, of course, remember most fondly. The time and effort that Tim took to ensure that everyone who came into the Members Room, be they first-time visitor or regular customer, went away with the books that they were looking for (even if they didn’t know they were looking for them). Tim was a kind and humble man who will be sorely missed by his friends, family and everyone here at Folio. A real gentleman.
