Now available - The Natural History of Selborne

One of the best-loved books of all time

1789 was a tumultuous year by any standards - revolution raged in France, Fletcher Christian led the mutiny on HMS Bounty and George Washington was unanimously elected first President of the United States. In a bucolic corner of England another event took place, the importance of which can still be felt today. The Reverend Gilbert White published The Natural History of Selborne, his observations of the wildlife in his rural parish in Hampshire. Believed to be the fourth most published book in the English language, Selborne is both a pioneering work of natural history and an exquisitely written tribute to the English countryside.

The Folio Society will soon be publishing a new edition of The Natural History of Selborne, beautifully bound and illustrated with dozens of contemporary paintings, including the watercolours by Hieronymous Grimm commissioned by White for the first edition. This edition will also include a newly commissioned introduction by eminent historian Sir Keith Thomas. The Natural History of Selborne is now available to order - click here for details.
