Mappa Mundi reproduction praised on the BBC

Expert describes it as 'absolutely superb'

The Folio Society reproduction of the Hereford World Map has received glowing tributes on the BBC programme Medieval Maps: Mapping the Medieval Mind, broadcast on Monday 19 April on BBC4 at 8.30pm.

The fascinating programme, the first in a three-part series called The Beauty of Maps, explored the richness and mystery of the Hereford World Map, with its more than 1,000 inscriptions and painted images. Interviewees included the British Library’s Peter Barber, and Paul Harvey, who lent their expertise to our reproduction, and the artist Grayson Perry, who has created his own rather unconventional version of the map!

The ending of the programme was devoted to the Folio Society reproduction. Here are some of the tributes our reproduction received:

‘I absolutely love it. I have to keep on telling myself I’m not looking at the original … but as a vision of the original, it’s absolutely superb. It gets across what an extraordinary spectacle the original must have been. It really helps us envision what this would have been like to come across in the cathedral as you walked up the aisle, and came across this absolutely astonishing object.’ Dr Thomas de Wesselow, Art Historian

‘This authentic reproduction of the map opens up new opportunities for the future appreciation of the Mappa Mundi. It brings the past right into the present, marking the latest chapter in its extraordinary ability to fascinate us and draw us in.’ Denis Lawson, Presenter, Mapping The Medieval Mind
