We are at the height of the French Revolution, les aristos are being denounced and summarily guillotined in their hundreds. But more and more are rescued, in the most melodramatic circumstances, by a small team of English gentlemen, led by a shadowy and romantic master of disguise - the Scarlet Pimpernel. So far, ‘that demmed elusive Pimpernel’, has kept his identity a secret, even from his wife. But can he escape the cold eyes of the French agent, Monsieur Chauvelin? Hungarian-born Emmuska Orczy first wrote her entertaining escapade as a stage play in 1903 - its subsequent adaptation into novel form continues ot delight all those with a taste for adventure.
