Ovid's witty celebration of the battle of the sexes, here illustrated with a magnificent series of erotic paintings, has been triumphantly translated into the idiom of today. This exuberant guide to seduction was published in the first century AD; it was a huge success and got Ovid into a great deal of trouble. The Emperor Augustus banished him from Rome, probably because of Ovid's none-too-subtle hints at adultery in high places, and his recommendation of the Emperor's parties as the best for picking up girls.
