Travels with a Donkey

‘We are all travellers in what John Bunyan calls
the wilderness of this world – all, too, travellers with a donkey;
and the best that we find on our travels is an honest friend.’
One of the best-loved travel books of all time, Travels with a Donkey is an affectionate and amusing account of the author's 120-mile walk through the southern-French region of Cevennes. At the time, this was a semi-wilderness renowned for Protestant rebellions and savage wolves. Stevenson had suffered from ill-health for most of his life and at the time was struggling to survive on a meagre income derived from his writing, but he longed for adventure, and was determined to complete his journey, aided only by the stubborn, wily but lovable Modestine, his donkey. In 1967 The Folio Society commissioned Edward Ardizzone to illustrate this enchanting book, which is now available for a new generation of members to enjoy.
