Saint Peter’s: The Story of a Monument

Revered as a place of pilgrimage, the Papal Basilica of Saint Peter in the Vatican – or simply Saint Peter’s – is the largest basilica in the world. It has been studied extensively, but this book is the first complete architectural history of the building and its adjoining piazza.

Using photography, architects’ drawings and reconstructions, the authors begin with the construction of the first basilica in the 4th century, before examining the many changes made to the building until it fell into disrepair in the 15th century. The story of the Renaissance masterpiece we know today begins with the 120-year construction of the new basilica under a succession of popes, who employed the finest architects, sculptors and artists – Michelangelo and Bernini being the most famous. Although the basilica was complete by the 1620s, Bernini continued his work on the interior and designed Saint Peter’s Square. The authors complete their survey by examining the additions to Saint Peter’s since the 17th century.
